Poem: Leaf Circus

Leaf Circus

autumn escape artists

were more numerous than straitjackets.

a Ferris wheel bent from collision

clutched rubble from a tower of Babel.

perky clowns

devoured each other’s antics,

unable to move on,

amid bleachers mangled and

twisted as crispy chips.

a backflip of poodle intercepted

a fire-breathing tiger.

tightropes less taut than wobble

orbited a ruptured tent whose

post was a broken spine.

all of it frozen in place,

the scenes forming a seesaw

readied for the acrobatic of fate,

waiting

for the next hammer fall of gust.
