Poem: Dances

Dances

westerly waves

string a giant olive viola

dubbed an “ocean,”

a place where albatross

dance for years

to bond for life with a mate.

Arachne herself must admire the web,

a slope-soar so fine

of romance to ride.

have i not myself

wished to be an albatross

on such a glorious quest?

and yet

could it not drown a poet’s soul

to praise the foamy silk

of just one wave?

===================================

"Albatrosses are highly efficient in the air, using dynamic soaring and slope soaring to cover great distances with little exertion. ... Pair bonds between males and females form over several years, with the use of "ritualised dances", and last for the life of the pair."
