Poem: Montecito Hike

Montecito Hike

a camphor of oleander,

musky greenish-blue,

and sweat-laden dust

haunt sanctioned swerves

of lupine and wild radish.

osprey/gull-like birds

figure-eight over acres

of deadlocked pale husks,

straw-blonde tresses

on the skulls of thicks clods,

fields and fields and fields of them,

tilled dirt so disturbed it shines.

a khaki man with big epaulettes

orchestrates tractors and tosses

a braggadocio of mean sun and cruel earth;

and yet, he shall render heaven.

above his head,

sanitized on layered slopes well-shrubbed,

fine-kilned constructions

mantle the harnessed hills

with a godliness of haciendas.
